The title of the exhibition is borrowed from W. B. Yeats idea of a reservoir of souls and images that functions as a meeting point between the living and the dead. Humans would have access to the Great Memory through dreamlife, either by dreaming or by inducing themselves into a hypnagogic state to listen to voices of the dead, who would share their wisdom, as well as giving advice about everyday life actions. The Great Memory could be viewed as a metaphor or symbol for our relation to history; a constructed ”space” where temporality is collapsed, and the private merges with the collective. The reservoir of images in this work stems from my collection of embroidery bought at flea markets. It's a treasure of images with a wide range of symbols/images, some of them belonging to ancient cosmology, and the culture of invocations. Others representing folk beliefs, popular imagery and are a part of an idealizing culture of rural life forms.
Flip Projects in Napels, whis is runned by artist and curator Federico del Vecchio, hosted the frist iteration of the Great Memory between 2023 and 2024. The installation is made in an old family chapel in central Naples.
The exhibition was supported by IASPIS.
