The series Neighbours are black and white photographs coloured by hand with gouache, tempera, crayons and charcoil, originally made for the exhibition Rooms in-between Rooms at Moderna Museet, Stockholm 1992. After traveling round the districts of Småland and Skåne and devoting myself to taking photographs of houses in the little towns I felt as though I had discovered a new world, in spite of the fact that this was the world of my childhood. Colouring the photographs was a process of reconstruction, or rather post-construction, where I recreated details in an associative manner based on memories and experience of the small town architecture. Through both my choice of objects and method I tried to emphasized the ongoing construction of the house itself, re-buildings and additions, like adjunctions, where often anachronistic details were added to the original architecture. There was a sense of not belonging emerging from the houses, a sometimes desperate need for roots and history, a will to turn aside from the modern project.
