In the autumn of 2005 my then seven-year-old son David had been reading and writing for some years when suddenly realized that words also could be images that express things beyond the linguistic level. An A could sweat, a F could shine, an O could bleed, an M could be spiky. Other letters were able to vibrate, cry and perspire.
Even the very act of writing could induce visual meaning; the weakness and the strength of the hand; the hesitation of the pen on the paper, or the prompt pressure. These were great discoveries and opened up a new world. I asked him to write certain words, phrases and titles of books – most of them related to epistemology of some kind. He was free to choose the sentences’ appearance or “typeface”.
The first text was “The process has started” and this set the tone for the work/game. David’s ability to make this kind of drawings only lasted for a short period. And when I show him the drawings today he doesn’t even remember doing them.
